Week 4 Newsletter

Hi Families! 


Kids are in full swing of 3rd grade! We first want to thank you all for the incredible support we have received to get this school year off to a great start. Here is what we are up to in 3rd grade. 


Crew - We have been working in crew on how to use self talk to help yourself stay motivated and on task. We also worked on creating a flag for field day!

 

I-ready testing- We are almost done with our I-Ready testing! This week we have focused on finishing our reading and switching over to math. One more week and we should be complete!

 

Reading / Writing - We have continued our books study on Nasreen's Secret School. We looked at the lesson and moral this week and how to use details from the story to back up your thinking. The students then put all of this together to write a paragraph. Using an EL model, we learned how to peer critique and practiced using this to make improvements to our own writing  pieces. 

 

Expedition - We spent time this week learning the 3 branches of government and how they apply to local government.


All Block - This week we worked on a complete sentence. The students learned about how sentences are made up of a subject and a predicate. We also spent time learning about suffixes and how they can change the meaning of a word.


Math - We continued on our multiplication and division practice. Students are learning various strategies to solve multiplication problems without using a chart or calculator. We have gone through arrays, number lines, skip counting and students have gotten creative with teaching their own strategies as well. 


Important Information- Remember that Monday is Labor day so there is no school!

Week 6 Newsletter

  Hi Families!  We had a lot of fun this week in class. Students were challenged in all subjects and really persevered, found strengths and areas of growth as well.    I-Ready Results - We will be sending home their iReady results with them today.    Reading / Writing - Students are finishing up the second unit of our first module. This week, we discussed how people in different countries overcame learning challenges. We also learned about the geographical features of these countries, which tied in our current geography unit. Next week, students will be writing a cumulative report telling about what they learned. We will work our way through the writing process as we go.   Expedition - This week we began our geography unit. The students learned about some of the continents and what their geographical and cultural features are. Healthy Tuesday Crews

  Tuesdays are healthy crew days at our school this year. This is where we use time in crew to address our health standards. Today, we had the opportunity to begin to discuss what a healthy meal looks like. Using the image above from the website  http://www.nourishinteractive.com/  we discussed the different things that should appear on your plate and why.  We then talked about our own meals we had for breakfast this morning and how we can make them healthier. A few friends shared that they didn't eat breakfast and we encouraged them to make sure they are having a healthy start to their day. Please help encourage your child to look at their plate in the mornings and discuss healthy options. Remember we don't have lunch until 12:40 and that is a long time to try to concentrate with an empty belly.

Hi Families!  We have had a great first week of school! It has been great getting to know all of the students in the class. We are off to a great start.  Here is a summary of what we are working on in each subject and some important events coming up.  Crew - In class, we are working on setting norms to create a great and safe classroom environment. Our norms are based on our school habits of character. Norms can include everything from behaviors, academics, perseverance etc. I highly encourage you to ask your student what the classroom norms are in the class and even brainstorm some new ideas.  During the day, we have our togetherness time in which students play games and activities that help build trust and friendships with one another.  Academics- We have started our year with a readiness test in math to help us understand your child as a mathematician.  We have also done some writing and reading baselines to determine next steps for your child.
